Obverse: Bust of “Dokter Martin Luther”, 3/4 right. after Lucas Cranach.
Reverse: A fountain, surmounted by a crucifix, erected in memory of Luther in 1917. A young female kneeling in prayer at the fountain; a young warrior quenching his thirst. In border, “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott 1517-1917” (A strong Fortress is our God). K GOETZ in exergue.
To commemorate 400 years since Luther’s reformation of 1517.
This piece, and a number of others, were acquired for our collection back in October of 2004. These were early Ebay days and occasionally stupendous collections were being offered here in the States. I was visiting Russia at the time and had to keep tabs on the auction status using an early day internet cafe located on Nevsky Prospect in Saint Petersburg. Material in this collection was in a beautiful, connoisseur quality state and condition. We have coveted this example since that day and are sorry to see it go.
