(Friedensformal des Deutschen Reichstages)

1917

Cast bronze, Satirical medal, 58.2mm, 76.50g, Edge-punch “KGoeTz”, Frankenhuis 1468.

Obverse: Reichs-Chancellor Michaelis, standing before a desk decorated with the arms of Lorraine and inscribed, “Jedem das seine” (Every one his own), offering to deputies a peace palm, to which all of them extend their hands in applause. Date, “19. Juli 1917”. In border, “Friedensformel des Deutschen Reichstags” (Peace formula of the German Reichstag).

Reverse: View of the interior of Parliament where Mr. Lloyd George is delivering a speech in favor of Belgium, Serbia etc. His left hand points to (Flanders) on a flaming map of Belgium. On his right side are seated prime-ministers Paschitsch of Serbia and Italy’s Sonnino. In border, “Wiederherstellung 4. August 1917” (Reparation). K•G• immediately above map.

Most examples of this piece usually leave a lot to be desired. Perhaps production stress became more apparent for this late period war issue. One of the better we’ve seen though.
