The notion that anti-Semitism in France commenced with the Dreyfus Affair is a fallacy; the phenomenon preexisted this event. It had already been a factor in French life for some years, and it became especially prominent after the publication in 1886 of a violent and inflammatory book, La France Juive, by the journalist Édouard Drumont. The primary theme of the book posited that the Jewish people were responsible for France’s misfortunes and failures since 1870, and that they were a threat to the livelihoods and fortunes of honest Frenchmen.
This plaque was likely conceived and created in France between the latter Second Republic and the middle of the Third Republic.
