Obverse: Bust of “Oswald Boelcke, 28. Oktober 1916.”, left.
Reverse: An eagle flying over an airplane, on which a spirit, hovering in the air, deposits a sprig of laurel. In border, “Kampf in den Lueften XXXX” (Aerial battle – 40 shot down).
Oswald Boelcke was ranked the second highest successful aviator by the number of air victories, after Richthofen.
For the reverse of this medallion Goetz muled the obverse design from the 1914 National Aviation Donation, K-56, medallion. For this medallion he added the rim text and five clouds near the bottom above the also added ‘XXXX’.
Very nice fabric and although casting inclusions are present on the reverse, they do not take away from the commanding presence of this medallion.
