Cast bronze, Commemorative medal, 56.8mm, 40.0g, Edge-punched: KGoeTz, Frankenhuis 1444.
Obverse: Sea-monster with lion’s head, wearing admiral’s headgear (British Navy), in a conch armed with cannon flying British flag. Its long tail, in the form of an arc, extends to another conch; a seagull (Möwe) flying below the tail hits the monster with its wing. In border, “S. M. S. Möwe Heimkehr” (H. M. S. Moewe Return).
Reverse: A cartridge bordered by two sculpin, inscribed, “Das Weltmeer beherrschende Albion zeichnet in Gold eine Million” (Albion ruler of the oceans subscribes a million in gold – alluding to the capture of the S. S. Appam by the Germans). Above, 4. Miirz 1916 (Mar. 4, 1916. K – G to the left and right of tails. Below, “IV Reichs-Kriegsanleihe” (4th National War Loan).
Examples of this issue in ‘as cast’ condition are few and far between. In most cases, they are beat to Hell and it can be difficult to discern the already TMI (too much information) visuals of the obverse.
